





Art.e has been teaching Visual Arts to foreign students from all over the world since 1987. Located in the artistic heart of Florence, Santa Croce, the School offers a range of courses, divided into the following specializations:

Our aim is to provide quality courses which develop the creative, practical and technical skills of each student in their chosen specialization and thus provide them with what they need to make the next step in their career.
The course have a practical and professional focus and our policy is to maintain small classes so that the teachers can identify the requirements of each individual participant. The teaching staff are chosen because of their expertise in their specialization and they are also a valuable point of reference for students to the realty of the professional world. The courses are taught in the Italian Language and some students may wish to improve their knowledge either before or during their study at Art.e. We work with a leading language School in Florence, Linguaviva , and Art.e students can take courses there.

Art.e also specializes in helping students prepare their porfolio for University admittance and preparation for the entrance exam to the "Accademia di Belle Arti".

Photography courses
I semester (Beginners level)
Small size cameras: types and formats. Lens; objective and suggestive effects on the image. Focal length and focusing. Diaphragm and field depth. Exposure meter and measuring system. Shutter and movement control. Natural and artificial light. Shot position and subject study, choice of composition and photographic cut. Critical analysis of work. Professional and commercial film. Contrast, correction and conversion filters. Introduction to colour filters. The zone system. Dark room techniques.
Photography courses
II semester (Intermediate Level)
Lens incisiveness: Chromatic and geometric aberration, clearness and brightness; focal length and format dimension. Time scale, diaphragm scale, reciprocity, depth of field variation. Various image shots, from close-up to American. Depth of field as expressive element. Shot composition and articulation. Photographic film, sensitivity and chromatic temperature. Light characteristics: natural and artificial - direct and indirect. Facing the light, correct exposure calculations; grazing and frontal light, contrast control. Grey scale. Illumination techniques, light quality and special effects. Exercises in posing room. Dark room techniques. Learning basic level techniques. Portfolio Preparation.
Photography courses
Advanced and Advanced Professional Level (Short course only)
Professional optic counter camera: format, lens, focus and interchangeable functions. Camera movements: balancing, decentralising, checking the focusing plane, field depth and subject shape. Flatcopy film. Zone system for exposure calculation. Illumination techniques; colour, temperature. Subjective uses of photograph techniques. Individualisation of constitutive elements of the photographic image. Exercises in still-life and portraits. Paging and study of work presentation. Professional Portfolio preparation.

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE and FURNITURE DESIGN
Project methodology; study and analysis of space, evaluation of architectonic elements, function and distributive criteria; problems concerning space organisation. Analysis of the figurative, technological, functional, conductive components of the project. Choice of materials and colours to complement the project. Planning of single or complex furnishing components. The course will articulate into numerous planning exercises ever increasing in difficulty; from a domestic plan to equipping and furnishing commercial and public areas.
ARCHITECTURE
The course aims at pre-establishing an indispensable, figurative and cognitive knowledge in the students who commence Architectonic Planning, in order to develop the necessary critical abilities to favour a contemplation of the nature of architectural organisms, on their rules and transgressions, transformation of figures and composite tools, in the course of time and to furnish essential tools for critical appraisal of architectonic space, for comprehension of locality and its personality, for acquisition of correct methodological procedure in planning.

INDUSTRIAL DESIGN
Project and Methodology. Design as a subject. Shapes, functions, behaviours. Parameters for proper project development. Formal and technological contents. Product innovation. Relevant elements to an object. Specific and general elements of ergonomics, anthropometry, and economy. Drawing for design: graphic forms of representation. Packaging. Eco - Design. Colour in the project. Technology and technological processes. Materials, their characteristics and use: project economy.
Subjects: Planning, Technical drawing, Rendering and Graphic Techniques, Drawing, Analysis of the shape and colour, Elements of Marketing. History of Design. Preparation of Professional Portfolio.
ADVERTISING AND PUBLISHING GRAPHICS
The course has the objective to train students for Graphic Design in the field of advertising and publishing. Through a series of project exercises of ever increasing difficulty, the student develops a personal style and a methodology for individualism and elaboration of publicity message in all its forms, experimenting with manual and computer graphics representation.

DRAWING
Drawing as a basic subject for all artistic expressions. Drawing and composition of objects in space. Exercises with still life, plaster, portrait and nude. Applied perspective elements. Nude drawing: fundamental notions on the structure of the human body - movement, line, shape, volume. Linear drawing, chiaroscuro, etc. The use of different techniques and materials: graphite, charcoal, pastels, sanguine, china ink, etc. Search for personal expression.
PAINTING
Subject study. Visual perception elements. Chromatic spectrum. Painting structure analysis: the overall effect, details and their relationship. Composition. The main elements: line, shape, surface and volume. Colour, tone and light. Shadows, light and dark. Artistic perspective. Preparation of painting equipment. Utilisation of various painting techniques: watercolour, tempera, oil, acrylics, encaustic, imitation fresco and combined techniques. Use of spatula. Contemporary techniques. The student is stimulated in the search for individuality.
ANTIQUE PAINTING TECHNIQUES (short and intensive courses only)
The course studies antique painting techniques. Primary and secondary colours. Chromatic chart, preparation techniques of painting equipment. Practical exercises on the use of Renaissance techniques: colour preparation, egg and oil tempera; encaustic, gilding, imitation fresco, fresco and grafitti. Oil paint.
SCULPTURE (Short and Intensive courses only)
Subject choice and preparation of the basic drawing. Workbench preparation for clay or plasticine. Clay modelling, bas-relief and in full round.
Scaffold construction, whole or sectioned plaster moulds according to the classical method. Advanced level in external sculpture workshop: marble, stone and travertine sculptures using geometrical rules, staplers, triple compass enlargements. Marble polishing, stone and travertine sanding, reducing, sharpening and tempering of chisels on forge and anvil. Carving soft and hard wood according to the classical method. Testing new tools and modern techniques. Combination of different materials.
