  • About Naba

NABA - Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano is a training Academy of Fine Arts and Design, formed in 1980 by a group of artists such as Guido Ballo, Gianni Colombo, Franco Grignani, Carlo Mo, Emilio Tadini, Tito Varisco and Luigi Veronesi, in order to challenge the rigidity of the academic tradition and to introduce new visions and languages closer to the artistic contemporary practices and to the system of Art and creative professions.

NABA is a non-state Institute, which is legally recognised by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) and issues BA and MA degrees. NABA trains students and professionals in the areas of Design, Fashion and Textile Design, Theatre Design, Graphic Design and Art Direction, Media Design and Visual Arts. NABA education integrates the more traditional disciplines of visual representation with the new digital technologies.

    Philosophy

NABA’s education integrates the traditional disciplines of visual representation, the contemporary digital practices as well as the critical project culture of Italian design. NABA’s training philosophy is based on the project-applied Art, synthesis of creative sensitivity, critical-methodological knowledge and technical-manual know-how. NABA’s programs are characterised by an interdisciplinary methodology aimed at the development of artistic-professional competencies and profiles in the fields of Art, Design, Fashion Design, Graphic, Media and Theatre Design. This approach is the result of a constant experimentation, of a strong vocation to research and to the relation with the artistic and productive context as well as of an attention paid to the ethic dimension of training. NABA’s new campus, sited in the historical area of Navigli, was inaugurated in June 2005. NABA is an international institution, which integrates students of 45 different nationalities in its educational programs and promotes intensive educational exchanges with Art and Design universities in Europe, USA, Latin America and Asia. NABA collaborates with prestigious institutions such as Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (London), Philadelphia University, Pratt Institute and Rhode Island School of Design.

    ACADEMIC DEGREES (IN ITALIAN)

NABA offers a wide range of academic degrees, valid in all European countries and in all countries outside Europe that have a bilateral agreement with Italy on recognition of academic qualifications. Each program is linked to a specific numberof European University Credits (CFU). All of the Academy's three-year courses are fully legally recognised by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR). At the end of the academic course, having passed all the necessary exams and having presented a thesis, students are awarded the "Academic Diploma", legally valid (for state exams, teaching and some professional exams). The Academic Diploma is equivalent in all EU countries to the diploma of HIGHER EDUCATION and to the BACHELOR OF ARTS Honours and gives graduates right of access to the European Degree Courses for the diploma of Master of Arts (M.A. Honours) and also qualifies them to do a PhD in Arts Universities across Europe and in countries outside Europe which have a bilateral agreement with Italy on recognition of academic qualifications.

    INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS (IN ENGLISH)
NABA has developed a set of programs in English specifically designed for international students. These programs include semester abroad courses, summer courses and one-year master programs. The structure of the one-year master programs follows the indications of the Italian Ministry of University (MIUR) and therefore issues 60 European Credits, while summer and semester programs follow the structure of the US university system.

    SEMESTER/YEAR ABROAD PROGRAMS
    Starting dates: September and January
Intermediate level (open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students enrolled in International Universities, subject to the fulfilment of set prerequisites). These programs are developed in cooperation with a network of international universities and aim to respond to the educational needs of students who wish to spend a semester or a year in Italy to study, in English, in the areas of Fashion, Design, Visual Arts, and Communication. They follow specific syllabi defined in cooperation with the University concerned and change every year. US college/university students can obtain US transfer credits delivered by the concerned US university. (One semester corresponds to 15 US university credits).

    PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY/NABA CENTER FOR DESIGN
In conjunction with Philadelphia University (USA), NABA offers a unique semester abroad program specifically designed to fill the needs of Design and Fashion Management students who wish to receive a US university credit transfer in the following ways:

    1) To develop an understanding of design culture in Italy.
    2) To permit students to come to understand the rise of Milan as a principal design, and design marketing/managing capital, pursuing their studies in English.
    3) To use Milan as an open laboratory and permit access to its many resources, facilitating the ability of students to think about design - and to function as designers and design managers - in a more international manner. Majors of study presently include: Fashion Merchandising/Fashion Industry Management; Graphic Design; and Industrial/Product Design. A program in Interior Design is under development; please inquire. In addition to courses in the above majors, students may also take courses in Italian Language, Contemporary Italian Society, and History of Italian Design. For a complete program description, contact the NABA International Relations office or visit:

    SUMMER PROGRAMS
    (2 or 4 week-programs)
NABA offers a wide range of summer programs in the areas of Visual Arts, Design, Fashion and Communication open to high school graduates or to first and second year university students. The Introduction level programs (30th June - 11th July) are aimed at students without academic background on a specific subject area and offer a unique opportunity to explore a new creative environment. Students will learn from experienced and skilled professionals and will be taught how to research and present a creative idea. The intermediate level programs (15th - 25th July) meet the needs of students possessing previous knowledge on the subject area and keen to build upon this, through an intensive and specialised training experience. Students participate in a design environment simulating a professional studio, gaining profound insight into the technical components of the design process. Selected visits to museums, companies, production sites and design studios during the programs expose students to the creative and cultural environment in Italy. NABA strongly recommends students to combine the two week modules into a four week-program meeting specific training needs and especially in order to gain a more profound Italian design experience.
